U of Denver tests gender-neutral bathrooms
Residential advisers at the University of Denver have launched a “transgender awareness program” by converting a dorm bathroom into a gender-neutral bathroom for a few weeks.
Signs were posted around the building to let students know what was going on and why it was important, and organizers told campus media that the effects and reactions have been generally positive.
“Everyone has a different identity, and it’s not just racial,” Lauren Johnson, one of the Residential Advisers that helped put on the program, said. “It’s age, gender, social economic class, it’s everything. We want to build a community that says, ‘Hey, it’s okay.’”
The article linked above has many more details, but overall this is a pretty cool idea. Schools could benefit deeply from trying this out, even if only for a few weeks at a time.
My college has been doing this for decades and nobody thinks it’s strange or different. Kudos, U of Denver!
This reminds me of the year I was in UW-Stevens Point, the same year the Powers That Be wanted to introduce a gender...
Simple: they want brownie points.
Cool but the dorm bathrooms at my school are always gender-neutral. Why does it have to be a big awareness campaign?...
